JJ Thomas - Summer Update

I just wrapped up my season at Mammoth Mountain. They took it upon themselves and built a new pipe on top of the mountain. The pipe was cut perfectly every night and there was good sessions going down every day. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that the golf courses are open in town too so basically every day consisted of riding pipe in the AM then rest for an hour to get ready for your tee time at the the course, or skate your brains off at the Brothers Skate Park...

That's it. 08/09 season in the bag. To be continued at Mt.hood this July then to NZ for August.Have a good summer and see you at Windells this July.

Hello!

Finally my season is over!! It was a super bad season for me its started with a bad slam - pain all over the season and it ended with a slam (one night hospital in Norway)

Update about my season end trip to Norway:

The first 9 days we stayed at Danny’s place in Oslo because it was super bad weather up in Folgefonna). After 9 days of waiting we drove 7 hours from Oslo to Folgefonna to go shooting on the first bluebird day. First day up on the mountain we had to fight for spots because 4 or more crews where shooting up on the mountain (they did most of the pirate spots from the last years)! We had 5 days of good weather from this 5 days, we shot two spots, shaped 2 more jumps but we couldn't jump it because of the wind (it was super windy up on the mountain) bad luck again! So we decided to drive to Haugo’s place in Voss, two hours away from Folgefonna.

We stayed 6 days at Hougo’s Place. 4 out of 6 days we had bad weather but on the two days we tried to shoot something! One more time we checked the weather forecast for Folgefonna and finally the weather report was good for Saturday- you know we already built two jumps and they were so nice and we had to try to catch the nice day up there. So we drove up but the weather was not as good as we expected. Our two jumps were not possible to jump. We had to build another one!

Saturday- the day we shot: I can not remember anything from this day- the other guys told me that I tried on my first try a front side double cork and I slammed my head (heelside scorpion) the rotation was good but I opened the spin (bad for me) so make a long story short- 6 hours of talking bull shit, two doctors, one night at the hospital with a head wound. Season Ender!!

All in all it was a super nice trip!

Upcoming plans:

- Meeting with Redbull
-I have to fly next week to L.A. (686 ad shooting) -also I am planning a trip to Chile around August!

Huntington Beach, CA " (March 28, 2009) " The first official day of the Fifth Annual Roxy Chicken Jam, presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink, saw intense competition under sunny skies with great snow conditions at Mammoth Mountain, CA. Kelly Clark, 2004 Olympic gold medalist, took first place and her second consecutive Roxy Chicken Jam Superpipe Crown. Mercedes Nicoll (CAN) put down a smooth run to claim second place and Sarah Conrad (CAN) took the third spot on the podium.

With the crowning of the 2008/2009 Women’s TTR World Champion just a day away there was an air of anticipation and excitement at today’s event. Set at the main base area of Mammoth Mountain, the pipe had a nice shape and softened up in the sun allowing the athletes to put together some great runs throughout the day. The day started with Roxy rider, Kjersti Buaas, who is in the running to win tomorrow’s TTR title, suffering an early fall and bowing out early for the day. The final session was a jam format, so riders were hustling to put together some big progressive runs. The Mammoth winds kicked up halfway through the finals giving the competitors a bit of an added challenge.

The crowd saw Mercedes Nicoll (CAN) giving it her all with a run that consisted of a Frontside Air, Backside 540, Frontside 720, Cab 360 and a Backside 720. And, Sarah Conrad (CAN) was able to lock in third place with a great run throwing down a Method, Frontside 540, Backside 540, Air-to-Fakie, Cab 540 and finished with a Switch Alley-Oop 540. Roxy rider, Lisa Wiik (NOR) had a good day finishing in fifth place and will hold on to her World No. 2 spot. It will be a battle on the slopestyle course tomorrow as Kelly and Kjersti duke it out for the Title and Cheryl Maas (NED) enters the race for a Top 3 finish.

The competition was also hot in the second annual Mascot Superpipe Challenge. The infamous Roxy snowboarding chicken challenged all furry, feathered and ferocious mascots for a Superpipe showdown. Luke Wynen’s “Hot-Dog” took home the title and the $3,000 cash prize, with his sick moves. With Mammoth Mountain’s “Woolly Mammoth” came in second and claimed $2,000 and Patrick Reddy’s “Raccoon” took home third and $1,000.

The day ended with the inaugural Quiksilver “Cluck Off” featuring local Mammoth riders shredding the pipe. Local pro Greg Bretz won the event with a frontside 1080 and took home the $1,000 prize.

The three-day all-women’s professional snowboard contest is the final 6Star event of the Swatch Ticket to Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour and will name the 2009 TTR World Tour Champion. Bringing together more than 50 invited pros and 60 aspiring amateurs from around the world, the Roxy Chicken Jam is the biggest and most popular all-women’s professional snowboard event in the world. The event features both Slopestyle and Superpipe competition and has more than $50,000 in prize money.

The Roxy Chicken Jam will convene tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. for practice runs, followed by the Slopestyle main event. In addition to the competition, the Roxy Chicken Jam includes a winter wonderland festival, featuring a free concert with music guests Santigold and Cold War Kids on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 7pm. Additional activities over the course of the weekend include hair by Paul Mitchell, touch ups by Covergirl, Roxy demo boards and skis, and other giveaways and goodies.

The 2009 Roxy Chicken Jam is presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink. Additional partners include Paul Mitchell, Covergirl, JBL, Zumiez, Ford Models, FuelTV, Nylon Magazine, Mammoth Mountain, and Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour. Ride's Hana Beaman won top honors and $9000 at the first-ever Women's final, at the RIDE Shakedown. Shakedown’s unique competition format demands that riders master two disciplines in jam format: jumps and rails.

Sébastien Toutant won the jackpot today for the Men, earning himself $10,000.

Male and female snowboarders shared no less then $27 000 in prize money during the finals. This year, 37 riders participated in the main competition, 4 of whom were amateurs.

Finals
The evening final which took place under a constant downpour consisted of 15 men and four women competing for a hefty prize purse. Each rider was given two judged runs in which they had to call out their tricks before dropping in. Each run was judged 50% on the jump and 50% on the rail course. “I’m really stoked on the contest. The setup is a little bit sketchy but it’s going to separate the women from the girls [and the men from the boys], said Ride's Megan Whiteside, who was just stoked to be competing against her favorite pro Marie France Roy.

It's the first year that female riders have been invited to compete in the Ride Shakedown, something Mittermuller was clearly stoked about.

"I think it's great that they have women now and I think, although the set-up is a little bit crazy, it's something that we definitely can master," she enthused. "I mean, girls have been hitting all three of these features in a good way. I'm super stoked we got into this contest and I hope we'll be in here next year as well. And great respect to all the girls that were riding, because I think the riders were really going for it and it's really cool to see."

With a mix of pro and amateur riders such as MFR, Ride’s Hana Beaman, Charles Reid and Ride’s Alex Cantin competing in the women and men’s finals the crowd of 10,000 plus had their head’s turning and jaws dropping all night. When asked what he thought of the contest, Ride’s Nash Lugenaisse said, “It’s really good. There’s always lots of pressure "it’s all for show. There’s lots of pressure when there’s a crowd but it makes you work harder.”

It seemed to be that all the riders were working hard to impress the judges. When it came time for the girls Megan and MRF both pulled Frontside 5’s. As for the men, everyone seemed to one up each other. From Jeremy Cloutier’s Switch Back Rodeo 540 to Yale Cousineau’s Switch Back 9, and Charlie Reid’s Frontside 10, it was a case of go big or go home. However, at the end it was Seb’s Frontside 9 that had the crowd cheering.

Finals ran from 7 to 8 PM, and then we braced our livers for the infamous Shakedown after-party. If the noise from our neighbors partying next door to us in our hotel is any indication; it'll be one for the books.

The 8th annual RIDE Shakedown was sponsored by: RIDE Snowboards, Mont Saint-Sauveur, AMP Energy, Ubisoft, Coors Light, Empire, Oakley, Push.ca, Nixon, Nikita, IFound, Drop, Bern, Dose.ca, Thirty Two, Camp of Champions, Moog Audio, Snowboard Canada Magazine, MusiquePlus, 33mag. com, Slash magazine, Crux Magazine Myspace and Troublemakers.

Ride Takes the Crush Kids Snowboarding

School's in, suckers! The Classroom Collaboration hits the slopes.

After taking a long, hard look at other artistic collaborations across the industry, Ride's designers took a step back and thought about the kind of collab they wanted on their '09-'10 gear and decided to strike out in a new direction. Instead of teaming up with a hoity toity artist, Ride embarked on a collaborative project with Pam Neithercott's third period art class at Denny Middle School (West Seattle, Wash.). Promoting both art and snowboarding within the local youth community, Ride sought out a nearby Seattle school with an art program in need and proudly donated funds for art supplies and provided an on-hill snowboard day for the kids.

The on-hill field trip took place Monday, March 30th. The Ride in-house crew met up with 20 Denny students at their school, hopped on the charter bus and headed up to the Summit at Snoqualmie. The weather and temp made it ideal for these first-timers, and with a good ratio of students to seasoned shredders, the kids were on the lift and riding in no time.

Special thanks go out to the Summit at Snoqualmie, Smith Optics and POW Gloves for their generosity and contributing to the success of the day. We have to also give props to the crew of in-house people that took time to teach and ride with the kids; all had a great time and your efforts made it possible. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to teachers, Pamela and Roxanna, and all the kids that participated, you guys are awesome and we hope to see you out there again soon!

Keep your eyes out in the 09/10 season for the Crush board, EX Franken binding, and the Strapper Keeper boot, featuring the art of Denny Middle School students.

It was time to move on from Austria and even though we were bummed to leave
Marco Feichtner behind with all that good snow, we knew if we met up with Nico
Droz in France we would have the chance of finding some good snow in and
around Nico's stomping grounds of Avoriaz France.

Myself, photographer Crispin Cannon, and David Aubry set off on our 7 hour
drive from Austria to Nico's hometown of Thonon, France nestled on the shores
of lake Geneva or if your French, Lake Leman.

Avoriaz has been the stomping grounds of Nico from the young age of 10, so to
say that he has the place dialed is a slight understatement. After a quick
pit stop at Nico's house it was a 45 minute drive up to the base of the
resort where guests staying on the mountain have to load all their luggage
onto the tram in order to get to the accommodations. We arrived after dark
so once we finally made it to the top of the tram and you actually
see the resort and your first impression is that you are staying on the moon.
The resort is massive with a centralized village that looks like a wooden
space station. This may have been because of the crazy futuristic moon buggy
snow cat taxi that took us to our hotel. There are no cars up at the
resort so moon buggy snow cats and horse drawn sleighs are your only form of
transportation besides your own two feet.

Well it was a late night by the time we were settled and tomorrow was going
to be a whole new adventure. Our first day on hill we scoped out the
inbounds terrain got a feel for the fresh snow that was falling and made
plans for the following days. Nico had his Homies film crew in town so day
two was spent building jumps in the backcountry which happens to be in
Switzerland. It was something like 20 miles round trip of traversing, hiking
and snowboarding to make it to "The Zone", but well worth the tour. Besides,
its not every day you get to cross borders on your snowboard. This was our
routine over the next three days of our stay and the snow and sun were in full
cooperation. We bagged some shots, got drunk off Genepi, ate crepes, and ate
cheese and dried meat for days. The routine in France was super chill with a
fun crew of Nico's friends that gave us the true French connection.
After and before riding was spent at our friend Marco's "Seillot Bar", it
was espresso and croissants every morning and Ricard and beer after riding.

Our European tour was coming close to an end but we were content with our
footage, we had made many new friends along the way and had enough culture to
fill a petri dish the size of a swimming pool.

Our last day in Europe was spent driving through the night back to Munich
and returning our Big Black Chevy Ride van. Of course we had to get pulled over
by the police at some point and of course the only reason was because the
cops wanted to check out the van. I'm pretty sure they wanted to bust the
A-team... I hope we didn't disappoint!

JJ droppin some rhymes: Rap song for the Crested Butte Snowboard Mag trip

We all know Summit County, what do you know about San Juan, Gunnison or Sauguche County?
Here is what we found...

Smoking Chad Otterstrom

Seeing how a major storm just blasted us down here in Southern Colorado I thought it wise to give an update on this trip. Yesterday, JJ Thomas and Chad Otterstrom met up with us for a day of cat boarding down at Monarch and it would be foolish to say they didn’t get more out of this storm than the entire state. Expecting a foot or so, we were greeted with upwards of three.

Seriously... it was deep. JJ getting whitewalled.

After a few fun runs it was time to get to work, or at least try to. JJ put it best when he said, referring to the hi-fiving good times and powder ollies of the morning session, “Hippy shredding is fun, but we should try and set something up.”

JJ Thomas... self explainitory.

Easier said than done. With this much snow coming down it was basically a renegade slash and shoot mission with SNOWBOARD Mag’s Shaun Hughes just pointing his camera in the general direction of the devastation occurring. Here are the results: However they turned out, you get the picture. It was… just one of those days…

We would like to thank Monarch Powder Cats and Colorado Ski Country www.coloradoski.com , the state’s number one resource for 21 area resorts. Check their website for everything from snow reports to last minute deals. Word is this week is another snowy one for all of Colorado… So get on it! It’s dumping!

In weather that made me feel like I should have dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, short shorts, and mandals, I watched one hundred and two rippers make history. These kids of various ages, sizes, and riding styles had no idea they were making history, but just like any other day they were riding their hearts out. The incredible stage that was set by Clayton Shoemaker and the Bear Mountain Park Crew was something to behold and was a perfect catalyst for a break out performance in the TransWorld SNOWboarding TransAm. The TransAm Park at Bear always just appears overnight and is one of the first things anyone sees as they come up the steps in awe Saturday morning at Bear. It had everything and pushed each rider to step out of their normal riding and open up for creativity on a set up they could have never even imagined riding.

It was already a pivotal moment in the tour as it was the last stop of a train that started down the tracks, on the East coast, in January and only picked up steam as it crossed the nation. As the riders stood at the top of the park anxiously awaiting the introduction and start of the Traffic Jam, there was a strange feeling in the air. Some guessed based on the park that this would be something that would be talked about for some time to come. Others were wondering what these riders would do on such a different park set up. Any speculation was put to rest as all one hundred and two riders tore the park apart feature by feature. The Traffic Jam, an hour long jam session, gives each rider so much riding time that they can’t help but progress their riding to new heights. The Dakine Paper Shreds had front row seats to the action on the Dakine flat box to down rail set up. I am actually surprised they were still standing after the amount of heat produced by the likes of Devin Allen who was as consistent as the sunshine and warm weather at Bear. Ian Sams was also signing his name into the TransAm history book as he hit almost every feature in one trick and was just awesome over the Bear Mountain 4×4 Blazer buried in the ground. This feature also showcased something that I have never witnessed before. As one rider was stalling on the top of the blazer from the side another rider aired over the vehicle from the top jibbing the rider that was in mid stall. As both riders rode away unscathed they met at the bottom for a big hug and disbelief on what had actually transpired. It was something you would see on a most shocking moments TV show, a moment I needed a change of underwear to experience. The whole bottom of the course was a row of features set up in a skate park style line up with transition of both sides. This gave riders the option to combine tricks on several features in a row. Rainbow Woodall and Elin Bjorkum were combining one of the wall rides into the Oakley Shark lift pole set up that was forcing riders to hit the transition on the backside of the park or ollie to another wall ride at the end of the Oakley Shark pole. It was a matter of timing and fast feet to survive, one man who didn’t quite survive the shark wrath was a rider named Donkey who was awarded best fall for a backside spine contortion. Moving down the bottom row was the Zumiez Couch that had riders stalling and bonking into the transition on the other side. The High Cascade Snowboard Camp Marshmallow also saw riders flying well overhead with 360’s, 540’s, and inverts galore. The next feature down the line was a huge water tank that could be hit from the side or over top. Alex Hulett quickly pioneered what most could only name as a stall trick for lack of a better name and the inexperience of ever seeing something like it before.

Forty riders were picked to ride in the Ultimate Final, which was set up to isolate riders to certain lines of the park for a ten minute jam in each section. Melissa Spillman stepped ahead of the pack as a combo master and overall best female rider in each section. Ryan Tarbell had his eye on each line of the park and was riding like the TransAm scene had been up all season long. He was gaining speed from one side of the park and using the Ride Slime wall as skate transition to stall up top then drop back in to hit the Bear Water Tank from the side. That innovative riding put him in the top spot to take home best overall male rider. Riders who took home top honors received Custom TransAm Goggles from Oakley, Custom TransAm Backpacks from Dakine, My Little Pony and Nerf guns from High Cascade Snowboard Camp and Zumiez gift cards. First place earned TransWorld SNOWboarding TransAm trophies, Dakine backpacks and board bags, Ride Snowboards, Oakley goggles, and Zumiez gift packs. In the end it was a Ball Park Franks hot dog roast and a huge product toss that had everyone jumping for the sky. It was a perfect award for the exclamation point on a history making tour unlike any other.

The Transworld Snowboarding TransAm Tour has evolved and will continue to evolve because of everyone involved. It is not a surprise that we end the tour at Bear where they consistently set the standard higher and higher and set the tone for what we can do on next year’s tour. History was made this past weekend and your originators were everyone involved especially the riders. Get ready for January 2010 when we write the next chapter of fun.

Our girl Sarah Conrad from the Canadian National team has once again hit the podium, this time a 3rd place at the World Cup finals in Italy. This podium finish is just shortly after Sarah took 2nd at the Canadian open and 4th in Stoneham's World Cup stop.

Valmalenco, Italy - Sarah Conrad of Halifax, Nova Scotia took home the bronze medal at the final Halfpipe contest of the 2009 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup in Valmalenco on Saturday, winning Canada's 21st podium of the season.

Conrad scored 38.9 points in her first of two runs in the finals to take the third provisional score. In her second and last attempt at the gold, Conrad aggressively took control of the pipe, but fell while trying to do a trick she had last done three years ago that left her with a broken arm in November of 2004.

“It feels very good to be on the podium again. The pipe was pretty good and consistent, although it was smaller than what we are used to. I was riding pretty well in practice,” said Conrad after the contest.

Conrad posted her season's personal best result Saturday to step onto the podium for the second time in her career. Her first podium was at the 2008 Snowboard Jamboree in Stoneham, Québec, in March of last year.

Killington killed it for the last stop of the Chevy Grand Prix. The pipe was a monster 22 footer that was cut to perfection. On the day of finals the sun came out and the temps warmed up. The best part of the contest was the fans; they made the event for the most part. I even saw the first ever wave get going up and down the pipe. It was amazing!

The end results were a little tough for me. I couldn't finesse through the slush to get down perfectly but Michael Goldie did and ended up with the win. Slopestyle was a great show as well with Ride snowboards' very own Sam Hulbert taking the $7500 cash prize win with smooth style and flawless nines.

Hats off to the Grand Prix for another great season and stay tuned for updates coming from the US Open at Stratton...

Can you explain how a group of pint size terrors, many of which made the ultimate final, were sending it so big? They were calling themselves the Gnar Star Crew and one of its members named Rocket was pointing it past the Dakine Down Bar holding all of his speed and floating what seemed like twenty feet over top of the High Cascade Snowboard Camp Marshmallow. Another member of the crew Toby Miller, who I know I saw kill the hip in the Bear TransAm last season, some how just magically appeared to teach the Northstar Pole Jam a thing or two about ripping. It is only fitting that at a resort named after a star so many things can’t be explained. One of which is the park that appeared over night, many saw the lights that night, but were unavailable for comment on how the awesomely creative park materialized in the morning.

I asked Northstar Park Manager Chris Castaneda for comment and he raved, “ they are everywhere, and more are coming.” I know for a fact he and his crew have more info and are partly responsible for this phenomena. Nick Geisen was not afraid as he parted ways between the Dakine Paper Shreds to slay the Dakine down rail. Becky Bruce didn’t hesitate to showcase her talents on the glowing green Ride Snowboards Slimewall. Made from snow, the slime wall could be hit from both sides and over the top. Even Brekke was maniacally dancing across the Oakley drainage pipe that had water and the Oakley sharks spilling out the end for the riders to gap over. Another explained they heard a huge bang in the night and saw a strange orange glow hover over Northstar then disappear in the distance. Later reports were that the Zumiez couch was abducted and replaced by a fallen timber. The huge Zumiez Log Jib had riders spinning, stalling, and hand planting their way over it. Some might have thought it was a roadblock put there by a strange force, but that didn’t stop Tanya Oleskowicz from cutting through it with a plethora of tricks.

Eighty four riders pushed their way through the crowd witnessing the out of this world spectacle to ride in the Traffic Jam, an everyone at once sensation for an hour long. Forty riders were picked to ride in the Ultimate Jam, which showcased the high flying skills of riders like Jade McJannett and Chris Geisen in a 10-minute jam of each line of the TransAm Park. Proof of what happened that day was in the hands of all the riders in the end giveaway and awards party, a celebration of new friendship and mysterious visitors. Zumiez gave away two gigantic gift bags and gift cards poured out of the sky onto the crowd gathered there. Winners walked away liked space invaders dressed in White and Gold Custom Dakine TransAm backpacks and Custom TransAm Oakley goggles. High Cascade Snowboard Camp gave away so much fun stuff that riders could be seen floating out of the room with joy. Top finishers received TransWorld TransAm Trophies, Dakine backpacks and board bags, and Shiny New Ride Snowboards.
The only thing that can be explained is that the resort that they call Northstar has got a powerful force unlike any other and will be a park powerhouse for light years to come thanks to those flying far above it.

After a day of rest to catch up from our flight from Japan, Jah was at work for the morning where he drives the snow cats shaping the park so he has some pretty crazy hours. Will, Rebecca and I headed up the Laxx to find some pretty nice snow conditions. They weren't epic but it was super fun and we hiked a bit and found some nice snow. Plus the park was sick there was a good variety of features hupe pipe too.

We stayed in Laxx for a week it was so fun. We even had Raqullet, it's a Swiss meal and a really social way to eat. It's kinda a BBQ style in the middle of the table that has little pans that go under it you put cheese in the pan and veges and meat if you like. On the top you let it cook and then you eat it with a potato cheese and veges on it to with lot of sauces and pickles. So yummy!!

On to Montafon: Europe Part 2

We spent a couple more days in Switzerland doing some resort riding and
scouting terrain around St.Moritz, but I was out here to visit Marco
Feichtner and wanted to see what his home country of Austria had to offer.
It's interesting to see how the terrain and lifestyle can shape a rider and
knowing Marco likes to charge backcountry kickers and powder pillows, I was
not going to leave Austria until Marco showed me all his little secrets of
the Montafon valley.

Marco, Juuso Laivisto and I packed up our gear and decided to head to Marco's hometown of St.Gellenkirch Austria. St. Gellenkirch is one of but a
few very small villages that make up the Montafon region of Austria. Within
this valley there are a number of not so well known resorts that hold some
serious terrain for any condition or ability. Cliffs, tree's, kickers,
pillows, stumps...you name it! Luckily we had the best guide possible and
ample snow to call Marco's place home for the coming week. The snow kept
falling and Marco had some time to rest up from some injuries, while Juuso was still trying to kick some ISPO flu. After a day of rest the snow had stacked up and it was time to head into the tree's for waist deep stashes in the woods. Its illegal to Ride off-piste or in the tree's at many resorts in Europe so not only were we cautious of avalanches and getting lost or stuck, but we had to sweat getting tickets from the ski patrol too. Luckily we stayed pretty stealth and our pow missions were a success.
Everyday we had a filmer from the Pirates crew and at least one or two extra photographers on hand to catch all the action in what seemed to be a couple of feet of fresh snow. We split up a couple days between Silvretta (Marco's resort across the street from his house) Sonnenkopf, a few miles down the road, and a resort named Gargellen. Each of these resorts had endless terrain and could only feel that the week I had remaining here was not nearly enough time to see and do all that these resorts have to offer.

Marco, Juuso and the crew charged on as safely and as possible putting in the long days of getting the goods while conditions were at its best.
The teams luck headed a little south on our third day in Austria when Juuso
got cut off one morning by a skier. Juuso got caught up in some heavy cat
track congestion and chucked himself and his elbow right into some icy
rocks. It was a doctors appointment and a plane ticket home for Juuso the
next day. It was a bummer to see Juuso head home to Finland, but it wasn't a season ender and by the time you read this I would expect Juuso to be back up on the hill. It was at this time that I had to call the ball with only Marco in town and all this snow, so I called up our man David Aubry and team photographer Crispin Cannon to join in the fun.

Marco and I spent a day or two scouting new locations and took a day off to
enjoy some good ol' fashioned Austrian culture in the form of a little
village parade, which Marco seemed to have no idea what it represented. They threw candy out to on lookers and handed out schnapps in various digestive mediums such as mini ice cream cones, spray bottles, and of course the shot glass.

David Aubry and Crispin couldn't have arrived at a better time. From the
time their plane arrived in Munich to when their train made it to Austria, it had snowed almost three feet. However the train got delayed, all that snow had kept the train from reaching its final destination so that
night I set off into the storm to pick them up after their 30hrs mission. It was a scary drive to say the least. I navigated through the night with snow covered signs covering signs I couldn't read and dodging avalanche covered tunnels and bridges. However the rendezvous was a success and David and Crispin had finally arrived after one hellish day of planes, trains and automobiles.

The Ride crew was now Marco, David, our photographer Crispin and myself.
Marco gave us a few more days of the royal treatment in and around Austria where we got a good mix of backcountry powder hounding and a day of sunny blue bird kicker builds, but as the days pushed on the urge to see more of Europe and the need to hook up with more of the team made it time to roll on.

Hey lets go visit Nico Droz in France.... To be continued!!!

Dew Tour 3rd Stop - NorthStar

Well, the first ever Winter Dew Tour has come to an end! With the final stop at Northstar-at-Tahoe, the sun was shining and the place was packed. Northstar reported record attendance on Saturday, but then came Sunday. Unfortunately, for halfpipe finals it was pretty much pouring rain all day and folks were soaked. Even though the crowd had died down and the weather was less than ideal, it didn’t prevent the Riders from putting on a show. Our own JJ Thomas represented in the finals, finishing 5th in the men’s pipe and Sam Hulbert was 5th overall in points for men’s slopestyle. Megan Ginter had a strong showing in both of the previous stops, but unfortunately due to injury she was unable to participate in slopestyle at Northstar.

JJ Thomas participated in a poster signing at the party Porter’s hosted in their Truckee location. The store was packed with eager beer drinkers spending money.

Sam Hulbert was interviewed in the Dew Underground tent with Fuel TV on day two of the Dew Tour. http://fueltv.fuel.tv/jstouffer/blogs/view/5554?item=39483&type=Blog
Words below by JJ Thomas:

The final stop of the Dew Tour proved to be great. Sun and warm temps helped the snow soften up enough for everyone to feel like a hero. Besides the great snowboarding, some of the week's highlights were a performance by Common right in the village and a Party Super-Sale at Porters!

The pipe was good at Northstar as always, and the practice days were some of the most fun sessions of the year. The qualies were a blast due to the warm temps and soft conditions. This was all great, but then the finals turned into a tropical storm. Rain was coming down like a summer monsoon, but the show had to go on and on it did. I landed my first run and luckily it held to put me in 5th place. The flying tomato had a chance to win but fell at the end, which caused the crowd to erupt into a frenzy. I’m not sure if it was for the excitement of Mason's win or just for the fact the comp was over and everyone could go home and dry out! Either way, it was an insane event considering it was raining and the crowd came out to cheer us on through miserable conditions.

Thanks to the Dew Tour for putting on one of the best tour's I've been involved with and thanks to the people at every stop who came out in the cold conditions and supported us.

The snow gods have been good to Europe this season and it was time to catch up with Marco Feictner Juuso Laivisto and the rest of the Pirates film crew. My first stop was to fly into Munich and pick up a vehicle to get my ass around Europe.

I never thought in a million years I would be driving a jacked up Chevy van over here and by the looks of most peoples faces you would think they would expect Mr. T to be driving. Once I was geared up with the van and some product for the team I warmed up "Patton" a.k.a. Big Black (The Ride Van) and began my journey up in to the Alps passing through Garmish Germany, Austria, and on to my first destination St. Moritz Switzerland. Patton made its way slowly through the dark windy roads of the alps under a full moon with mountain peaks seemingly biting down on my as if I were looking out a sharks mouth. I finally arrived in St.Moritz and was just in time to join the Pirates crew for Pizzas and beers and our plans for the following days. Stories of avalanches, clear skies and passes sparked my imagination for what could be some of the best snowboarding I could expect from the notorious alps.

The next morning the sun was out I could see the peaks of picture perfect mountains all around us. We set off for a hike that morning right off the road for a couple jump spots Juuso and Marco found the day before. The location was only maybe 300 meters from the road but the boot pack was waist deep. Tiring to say the least but knowing this snow was up on the peaks it was a tease knowing we could just be making endless powder turns on such a nice day. Then again it was the first day of the trip and the avalanche danger was high. We knew it would all be there the following days. By the afternoon Marco had bagged some shots as well as Juuso but not without a scary moment when Juuso overshot a landing and tomahawked his head six feet under the snow. Juuso was stuck upside down for close to three minutes while we struggled wading through the deep snow to get to him. Luckily Juuso saved himself from drowning by eating the snow and blowing it away from his face and repeating the process while snow kept falling in around him. At the end of the day we were all beat cold and ready for a new day with what seemed to be endless options all around us... to be continued!
